Retreats

Return to yourself, while in community, as we gather for an immersive nature and movement experience.

Let's retreat…

Wild Yoga Africa retreats offer the opportunity to simplify, replenish, and soften into nature’s cycles.

To remember how it feels to be body-connected, mind-rested and soul-restored.

Retreats generally take place over 3 or 7 nights, and the latter can include a trail experience (see Trails). Retreats are often co-hosted with holistic nature guides, sometimes in partnership with professionals in the sacred, like animal communicators, ancestral healers, embodiment teachers, eco-therapists and somatic therapists.

Our retreats are for anyone wanting to go deeper, and spend more time with the body, while in a wild space. Through languorous movement sessions and various somatic tools, and with nature as our muse, we invite delicious rest and deep play.

We take a break from the pressures of modern life. We take the time we’ve been craving—to be ourselves, to reconnect.

Wild Yoga Africa retreats offer sanctuary to seekers, and the time, space and support to “live the questions”.

We find comfort in the ritual of gathering daily, no matter how we feel. We may find discomfort, too, as we meet and move and connect differently, as our masks fall away.

Retreats are not therapy (unless a certified therapist is present), but they can be therapeutic. Through movement and deep nature immersion, we explore themes like intuition, replenishment and belonging—especially belonging in our bodies.

We find ways to access more presence and clarity in our lives. Mostly, we learn to rest—not just when we have become desperate for it, but as a habit. Because rest feeds us.

Ideally, we return to our lives knowing the things we secretly knew. If necessary, we make wise and heart-directed changes.

Where we are

Retreats currently take place in the bushveld of Greater Kruger in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, South Africa. A few more locations, including the Western Cape and Botswana, are on the cards.

We come together in locations where we can feel at peace and at home; sometimes simpler is better.

Our accommodation is a shelter for sleep and food, for sharing and celebrating, but it is nature who holds the space for us.

Groups are small (max 10), allowing for a very personal experience. Ideally, we practise a digital detox so that we have the opportunity to undo some of the structures of our modern lives.

Our (precious) time together

We relate with nature through both silent and interpretive walks with our wilderness/nature guide, as well as interactive activities like tracking and bushcraft.

We relate with our bodies too, through wholesome movement as well as breath, touch and meditation practices—both at our accommodation and outdoors.

The programme is varied and creative, and may include sunrise pyjama meditations, free journalling, uncomplicated art-making, and nature connection practices like sensory attunement. We balance reflection circles with time for solitude.

Food is important too. We take some of our mealtimes in silence; other times we gather over a festive dinner.

Our programme always includes time for time out.

Be moved by nature

On retreat, we take a deep dive into the body. Rooted in a wild ecosystem, we have the opportunity to rediscover our own “animal body”. We explore what it might take to move away from self-criticism or shame and toward reverence and play.

It is important not to expect studio yoga. Some of our body practices may involve not moving at all.

We look within, but not to the exclusion of the (natural) world around us.

We explore the messages of the body, as well as questions like: How do I connect (or not) with my body? How do I move through the world? What can nature teach me about replenishment? How can I feel more at home in my body and in the world?

You are welcome, no matter your yoga experience.

“Rather than chairs and tables, I preferred the ground, trees, and caves, for in those places I felt I could lean against the cheek of God.”
