some mirrors
are so extraordinarily unflattering
they should be banned
it’s what i thought
in that sweet little bathroom
at that gorgeous little log cabin
in magoebaskloof—
a word so delicious
i want to say it all over again
𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘧
later i decided
to face my face
how i might be
in twenty years:
all creased
with eyes asparkle
deep shadows
strong cheekbones
probably jowls
(but still that bum)
i wouldn’t even have stopped
to think about looks
were it not for that looking glass
i’d have been beautiful
simply because i was of the forest
at home
in a deep-rooted
extraordinary world
It started off as a mirror day.
I look forward to reading this in 20 years.
