this, this is it!
i’m committed
this, this time
the seedlings
their yellow bellies
and wobbly knees
maturing into rich green gifts
that i pick
softly
asking
what can i give back?
and so i offer
the eggshells
painstakingly washed, crushed
and scattered
to ward off snails
(admonish anyone who
tries to kill them!)
there, there!
the gooseberries too
and their messy goo
some spared
most shared
with the grey squirrels
(i’m not as charmed by this
as you might think)
here, everywhere!
the rain
no longer funnelled
down paved street
to nowhere
but collected for
its life(-giving) purpose
and the visitors!
so winged and secretive!
on saturday
i will gather
the garden salad
for sunday’s lunch
Finally, during lockdown, we got a veggie garden going. It’s been a long-time dream of mine, with a few failed attempts along the way, mostly because I just didn’t commit or pay enough attention.
